Have you ever found yourself wondering, “What’s so special about me?” If you have, you are not alone. Many people question their identity from time to time.

We can all recite basic facts such as our name, age, background, career, hobbies, etc., but beyond that, we may struggle with articulating who we really are and why we are.

If you can relate, I will start with this: Your existence is not a chance of nature. You are God’s creation to do great things for him.

From the Source

Have any of you ever tried to put something together (hello, Ikea!) without all the information and been totally lost? In this case, you can just look it up the manual on the magical Ikea website; but let’s say you couldn’t get online that day. Wouldn’t you wish you had the actual owner’s phone number so that you could ask him to kindly walk you through it! And while that is a tad bit unrealistic, an instructional manual or user guide would certainly increase the chances of putting the thing together using minimal time and energy.

Well, our lives are the same way! Sometimes things can seem very confusing and overwhelming. We often receive conflicting information from different sources and may not know who or what to believe. Is dairy a good thing or not? I’m so confused! But seriously, navigating this life is not a cakewalk. Only we were not left in complete darkness here. Our wonderful Creator not only gave us unlimited access to Himself, but he left us with a book (the Bible) telling us everything we need to know about ourselves and our purpose.

Your True Identity (based on Genesis)

Genesis 1:21 (ESV) says, “So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good..” In verse 24, he said the same things as he spoke the livestock and wild animals into existence.

But then we go to verse 26 where God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

See, there was something very different that took place when God created us. First of all, He didn’t just speak us into existence like every other living thing. He took his time with us. He said “Let us make mankind” which means He deliberated with God, the son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. We were not created just any old way but he formed us in His very own image and likeness with His very own hands. Our loving Father created us to be rulers over all other creations. To top it off, verse 28 says that He blessed us.

His masterpiece

If man can make something this beautiful, how much more breathtaking are we, who were created by the ultimate Master?

Have you ever been assigned a project for class or work that was on your favorite topic and you just knew you would knock it out the park? You worked extremely hard on it and made sure the presentation was perfect. It was full of your style and personality. And you just couldn’t wait to present it because you knew it carried a part of you in it. That’s what you are to God. You’re His best work and He’s just so proud of you.

Every detail of who you are, every feature and characteristic was made in His perfect image to reflect a special part of Him. You were made just as He wanted you to be. When you second guess yourself, really what you are saying is “God, you made a mistake; You didn’t do a very good job.” But God responds, “I don’t make mistakes. You are a perfect reflection of me.
