I’ve shared with you how I became a believer of essential oils and some of the benefits it has added to my life. I also explained that there are ways that essential oils can actually be cost effective over time. Today, I want to go a step further and share the actual breakdown in price. You will also get a better understanding of the different purchasing options and several ways you can save with an essential oils starter kit.

Purchasing Options

If you are purchasing individual oils from a Young Living (YL) distributer, you will pay the retail price. As a YL distributer (member), you receive 24% off of the retail price and become eligible to enroll in Essential Rewards (ER). What’s cool about ER is that you receive an order every month and earn 10-25% back on the purchase amount. You even get free gifts as you reach certain milestones such as, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. It also qualifies you to receive a bonus when you refer someone. When you sign up as a new member, you get more than 50% off!

The cost has been broken down even further to show you how much an actual drop of oil will cost if paying the retail, member (24% off), and new member (54% off) price.

Additional Supplies

Because I do so much with my essential oils, I am going to start by listing all the extra supplies I purchased while using my kit. I’ll also add that I use Amazon Prime, so I receive my shipment in no more than 2 days and never pay any fees. If you are a student, you can sign up here for a student account which gives you a 6-month free trial. Otherwise, you can still get a free 30-day trial here.

  • Two amber glass spray bottles for 12.98
  • 24 cobalt roller bottles for 14.99- I have these roller bottles though there are several great options to choose from on Amazon. Just make sure to use the darker cobalt or amber bottles as they provide essential oils with ultraviolet protection. You can also buy ten YL roller fitments for $10. If you have empty essential oil bottles, you can use them to make the bottle into a roller. The starter kit comes with one to get you started.
  • 16 oz. bottle of Molivera Organics Fractionated Coconut Oil for 14.47- Again, there several great and even cheaper options but this is what I have.

Thieves Household Cleaner

The kit comes with a 1-oz sample packet of Thieves household cleaner. With that 1-oz sample packet, I was able to make 2 all-purpose cleaners, 1 heavy degreaser, and 1 glass cleaner as shown below.

Thieves household cleaner

I used one 16-oz bottle, a 2 oz bottle and three mason jars that I had for the extra solution.

You can buy an additional 14.4 oz bottle of Thieves household cleaner for $22.50 as a member. Before you freak out, let me remind you that all YL essential oil products are extremely concentrated. While you can get a 24 oz bottle of Windex or a 30 oz Clorox cleaner for about $3.50, that’s all you get (besides the toxic chemicals, that is!). But if you consider that the suggested Thieves ratio for use as a medium degreaser is 30:1, you would see that $22.50 would actually give you 18 24-oz bottles. That comes out to $1.22 each. The best value would be purchasing the 64 oz bottle for $87.75. You can get eighty 24 oz bottles of that, making each bottle only .91 cents!

Yay! Understanding the breakdown makes it much better, but also recognize that these are all-natural products with no harmful chemicals. That’s a huge win all in itself, as most organic products tend to be expensive. For example, Walmart sells 16 oz bottles of Greenerways Organic All-Purpose Cleaner for $10 each. Ouch!

Thieves Cleaner Recipes

All-purpose cleaner: Combine 1 capful Thieves Household Cleaner and 3 cups water.

Degreaser: Combine 1 capful Thieves Household Cleaner and 2 cups water.

Glass and mirror cleaner: Combine 1 capful Thieves Household Cleaner, 5 drops of Lemon or Citrus Fresh™ essential oil blend, 1 teaspoon white vinegar, and 3 cups water.

Floor Cleaner: Combine 1 capful Thieves Household Cleaner and 5 cups of water. For extra scrubbing power, I use baking soda as well.

Fruit & Veggie Cleaner:
A sink full of water
1 cup of Vinegar
5 drops of Thieves essential oils
5 drops of lemon essential oils

Laundry Recipes

Liquid Fabric softener:
15- 20 drops of Lavender essential oils= 1.35-1.80 (.09 per drop)
(If you substitute for Lemon= .75- $1.00)
4 cups vinegar = .96 cents (.24 per cup)
2 cups water
1 cup baking soda = .23 cents
Total $2.54- $2.99 lavender ($1.94-$2.19 lemon)

Replacement for Dryer Sheets:
In the dryer, I use wool dryer balls with about 3-4 drops of lavender each. After a week or two, I add more drops of EOs to the wool balls. That comes out to about .14 cents per load.

Roller Recipes

I shared in my previous article that I used to suffer from migraines and was shocked at how much using an essential oil blend helped. It was the first roller I made when purchasing my kit. I have also tried several other blends since then, based on the needs of my family and friends.  Here are all of the rollers I have used on myself, my children, or made for friends and family. I attest to the effectiveness of these rollers based on my own experiences, the results I saw in my children when sick, and the many thanks I received from family members and friends. It should go without saying that your doctor is your greatest resource and this should not replace his/her recommendations. However, you can discuss essential oils as a preventative measure and an acceptable alternative to some over-the-counter drugs.

I hope the information presented can help you make a more informed decision as to whether or not essential oils are a good option for your family.  I am not a sale person at heart, and will likely never be, but I do like sharing things that work. My goal is always transparency and helping you understand the value of what you are getting with the kit and your options for purchasing at member or retail prices. If you have any questions concerning essential oils or any of the recipes listed above, please comment below or email me at [email protected]. I would be honored to help you on your essential oils journey, whether that means having you on my team (YL member #15647588) or just helping you along the way. : )
